Xi De collected DV cassettes from different towns in China’s Hebei province. Each tape contained a recorded wedding ceremony of a new couple (estimated year 2000-2020). Xide selected snapshots from the recordings, constructing an abstract representation of contemporary Chinese society through the hybrid mixture of those traditional wedding ceremonies.

Wong Xi De’s work is shaped by their experience growing up during one of China’s most transformative decades, marked by rapid modernization and the rise of commercialism and digital propaganda. These rapid shifts, reflecting the nation’s ascent to global prominence, created profound challenges for individuals navigating an ever-changing society. Drawing from their own experiences, Xi De explores the subtle dynamics between “the power” and “the people,” often expressed through striking contrasts and sarcastic undertones. By blending elements such as authority and eroticism, Xi De constructs provocative yet nostalgic scenes that expose the contradictions and complexities of life in the current society. Through these contrasting images, viewers are invited to engage and re-evaluate the core elements that define the contemporary society.
